Plan your trip to Bavaria to experience Hitler's Eagle's Nest with travel writer Brett Harriman.

(NOTE: This tour begins and ends in Salzburg, Austria. If you're coming from another location, let Harriman know.)

FOR WORLD WAR II buffs, nature lovers and anyone with an adventurous side, this comprehensive all-day tour is an absolute must-do!

YOUR GUIDE, Brett Harriman, will escort you from Salzburg across the Bavarian border along a picturesque route into the alpine village of Berchtesgaden, then you'll experience the breathtaking beauty of Königssee in the Berchtesgaden National Park, followed by a thrilling journey up to the mountaintop perch of Hitler's Eagle's Nest at 6,000 feet!

(FOR A VISUAL on some of the sights and sounds to expect on this tour, view Harriman's two-part Berchtesgaden-Obersalzberg video series.)

HIGH ABOVE Berchtesgaden sits Obersalzberg, the former seat of an empire, once Hitler's neighborhood and spiritual heartland of Nazi Germany. On this history-drenched tour Harriman will guide you around Obersalzberg while narrating its dark past and pointing to the vacant lots wrapped in alpine flora that once prospered with structures devoted to a dictator's pursuit of world domination. You will see where the heads of the infamous Third Reich lived, chiefly Adolf Hitler, Hermann Göring, Albert Speer and Martin Bormann. Once off the bus, you'll have the option of touring the Documentation Center or descending into an intriguing bunker system outfitted with machine-gun nests at the threshold of Hitler's former mansion. The highlight on Obersalzberg, however, is the Eagle's Nest. We will jump from our tour bus onto a specially modified local bus and ride it up a four-mile stretch of twisting road climbing at a 22-percent grade to an elevation of 5,500 feet, more than a mile in the sky. From here, you'll walk through a 400-foot tunnel blasted into the mountain face to reach Hitler's former elevator, which will lift you another 400 feet within 45 seconds directly into the heart of the Eagle's Nest and jaw-dropping views!

ON THE other side of town in the wilds of the Berchtesgaden National Park you will behold the breathtaking beauty of Königssee, the only lake in Central Europe most similar to a Scandinavian fjord, surrounded by the dramatic scenery of vertical rock walls belonging to gigantic mountains that rise from its cobalt-blue waters. What’s more, Königssee is Bavaria’s deepest lake at 192 m (630 ft); it is 8 km (5 mi) long and hemmed in on three sides by the Alps that cast their dreamy reflection on the lake’s resplendent surface. To get in touch with this mesmerizing body of water, Harriman will guide you along its shoreline.

BESIDES THE exhilarating heights of the Eagle's Nest and the brilliance of Königssee, Harriman will lead you through the town of Berchtesgaden and expound on its alpine allure.

ON THIS exclusive tour, Harriman's goal is to give you a memorable time that you can treasure and share with family and friends, forever.

(See Comments at the bottom of the page and feel free to add one of your own!)

TOUR DETAILS and price: The tour will be approximately 6.5 hours, beginning at 10:00 and finishing about 16:30 on both the abovelisted tour dates for 2012. In Berchtesgaden, there will be a 45-minute break for lunch. (Harriman will notify you of, and point you to, your culinary options.) The price for this exclusive tour is only 55 euro (55€) per adult. (The price includes your tour guide, seat on the bus, and admission into the Eagle's Nest understandably, the price does not include personal expenses like food, drink, souvenirs, etc.) Considering that the local tour companies in Salzburg charge between 50€ and 55€ per adult for a similar 4-hour tour that only includes admission into the Eagle's Nest and minimal touring (because they have to hurry back and pick up the afternoon group), Harriman's tour is unrushed and therefore includes a guided tour of both the Eagle's Nest and Obersalzberg, as well as a stop in Berchtesgaden and a trip to Königssee in the national park. All told, Harriman's tour is longer (thus more educational), more personal, and cheaper (when considering the euro to hour ratio) than what the local tour companies offer. So, why not join Harriman in the mountains of Bavaria for a whopping day of adventure, history and fun.
